Normally when friends come in town and want to do something, I have already done it and can advise them on it. Good or bad, I can give them the low down. The Power Exchange is the one time I did not do that, and now I am regretting it.
Now I have been to the original Power Exchange in San Francisco, and found that place to be dark, dirty, and not so user friendly. Unless you wore a raincoat and liked to flash people… than it was a pretty cool place to go. So my expectations weren’t too high about the Power Exchange here in Las Vegas… but, being as they are new to Vegas I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
First of all I must say that it was a very clean place and everything was well laid out, with plenty of cleaning stations next to all the beds and in all the small theme rooms. The place is set up mostly for those who like to watch and those who like to be watched. Swingers seem to be their main focus, with the kink / BDSM added to hopefully attract more wankers.
The “dungeon” downstairs was a joke. Again, mostly for swingers to play some kinky games, but not for the real swingers as in those who like to swing floggers or dragon tails. The real kinky stuff was on the second floor, or so I was told. So we waited for them to open up the kinky area. And we waited and we waited… a few minutes turned into a good forty-five minutes. By then your slave will have curled up at your feet and said good night.
Apparently it takes some extra time to get the music in the kink area just loud enough to break glass, and the heat warmed up enough to turkey roasting temperatures. I am not sure, but we waited in great anticipation…
By now my out of town friends had arrived and we were trying to have a conversation. Silly me for wanting to try to talk to someone I want to play with before we do the deed… Talking is not an easy thing to do here. I swear my ears were starting to bleed from the excessively loud dance music pumping through all the rooms. If you have ever been to a busy dance club, you know what I am talking about.
Finally the “crowd” started to move to the second floor. Yup, the second floor was loud, hot, and filled with little rooms that offered a variety of options and fantasy’s. The real kink room was at the end of the narrow hallway. Walking down the hall and dodging the crap hanging from the ceiling, you got to see some cool and kinky artwork on the walls.
The kink room was everything I had now come to expect at the Power Exchange… something to be laughed at. It was a large bedroom style room. With a double cross in the middle that was not anchored down, a spanking bench, and some other “kinky” set ups that could not hold too much action without the fear of the equipment breaking.
Back in the main room I turned down the music to talk to my guests but, the owner turned it right back up to max +10. So we moved outside to talk and to allow me to apologize for even thinking this was a place to bring some kinky friends. The play that I did see happen was more on the level of “look at me” Green Door dungeon style, and maybe what you would see in bad BDSM flick.
If that is what you are into, go for it. The Power Exchange is your place. If you want a fun kinky dungeon like experience, go to the Lair in LA.
Maybe my friends and I are spoiled by the likes of the 1763 Club in Atlanta or the Liar in LA. But, how hard is it to do a little market research and figure out what your kinky customers want in a dungeon in Las Vegas?
At least the Libertine had it partially right. By having decent equipment that was built for play. Air Conditioning and an environment where conversation was possible.
The Libertine was a pretty good club for Las Vegas. The failure of the Libertine was that the owners couldn’t keep their lies straight and they believed their own hype.
The failure of the Power Exchange will be from not doing your market research. Thinking your name and reputation in a previous city will be all you need to make it in Las Vegas, and not really introducing yourself to the community.
Yes, this too will fail and I hate to say that. Las Vegas needs a public dungeon. But, it needs to be done right. Again, this one is not it.
If you want to build a dungeon business in Las Vegas, check your ego at the door, have a great lawyer, lots of money, and patience. Look at what went right and what went wrong in the past and when you do open its doors, run it like a real business.
A real Public Dungeon in Las Vegas?? It can and it will happen, just not with the Power Exchange.
